There is exactly one s sound there and two letters spending it, which is why writing a double s is such a natural thing to do. The pair belongs to the suffix -escent, and it is the same pair, doing the same silent trick, in adolescent, luminescent and obsolescent. Once the suffix is visible the sc stops looking arbitrary.
