lettersRETICULATE
Latinreticulatus, from reticulum, a little net
Eleven spellings, and nine of them go wrong on a vowel nobody pronounces. Reticulate has one stressed syllable, TIK, and four that go past too fast to leave a mark.
Net-veined. The veins branch and then rejoin, so the blade is covered in closed meshes rather than in lines running to the edge. Almost all broadleaved trees are reticulate.
Latin rete is a net; reticulum is a little net. The same little net turns up in the reticulum of a cow's stomach and in the endoplasmic reticulum of a cell, and it is the whole of the first three syllables here. A leaf described as reticulate has a net in it, literally.
